Holy Communion – The Eucharist

The Church teaches that Holy Communion is the foundation and the summit of the Christian life. Everything that we do as Catholic Christians finds its meaning in the Eucharist. When we hear the priest say the words during Mass, “This is my body” and “This is my blood” we believe that the gifts of bread and wine have become the actual Body and Blood of Jesus.

In the Eucharist we celebrate the fullness of the Christian life. This Sacrament can be received many more times than the occasion of one’s First Holy Communion. Each time we receive Jesus in this Sacrament we become more like Him. We attune our bodies, hearts and minds to receiving this most wonderful gift that Jesus left us at His Last Supper before His crucifixion. Each time we receive the Eucharist we are doing what Jesus asked of us: do this in His memory. We also perpetuate His activity of service in the world by following His example of washing His disciples’ feet.
