The Sacrament of Baptism is available to anyone desiring the Sacrament. It begins one’s journey in life as one of God’s beloved sons or daughters. As the priest pours water three times over the head of the person to baptised, he prays: “I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” Strengthened with the oil of the catechumenate and blessed with the holy chrism, the baptised persons begin a new life. They receive the light of Christ. Their ears are opened to hear God’s Word and their mouths, to proclaim His love. From the moment of Baptism, they have “put on Christ” and they can rightly be called Christian.
For children and infants, it is usual that Baptism takes place at the Church where the parents worship. Baptism makes one a member of the Church community. It is fitting, therefore, that the newly baptised with the parents participate in the life of their Church community.
Prior to making a baptism booking the parent or caregiver must attend a information session first.
Baptisms are all held at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Wollongong only by appointment only.
Admission into the Catholic Church should refer to the R.C.I.A. Programme which is conducted every year in our Church.
